Senior Copywriter

Location: Greensboro, NC

Position Summary:

The Senior Copywriter/Editor is a member of the Editorial Team responsible for ensuring that all of Market America’s content assets and communications comply with the internal editorial guidelines and the company’s strategic plan initiatives. With operations in nine countries, the company must maintain consistent brand messaging and strategic goal alignment across all global markets. Each editorial team member is a highly skilled and obsessively detailed writer, editor, proofreader, collaborator and project manager who can excel and pivot quickly in a fast-paced, demanding environment. We need another kindred spirit to join our team and help us crush it daily. We’re looking for a new Senior Copywriter/Editor who will skillfully manage ongoing weekly, monthly and annual projects while taking on intermittent ad-hoc assignments and assisting the Global Manager of Editorial with special projects, production scheduling and workflow management.

Essential Function and Responsibilities:

Content Management and Production

  • Project managing two country-specific bimonthly magazines from concept to completion, including content gathering, writing and editing, and facilitating all necessary approvals throughout the process
  • Performing first and second editor roles for multiple weekly market-specific electronic newsletters, including gathering and managing content in Jira and Word, making executive and global team revisions, and completing assigned roles in a thorough and timely manner for the subsequent editor’s review
  • Project managing international annual event programs for assigned market countries
  • Reviewing, editing, writing and researching for various ad-hoc assignments, including product catalogs, manuals, white papers, advertising copy, sales literature, web content, presentation slides, speaker profiles, biographies, video transcripts, manuals, recipes, labels and more

Collaboration and Workflow Management

  • Collaborating with global teams, designers, product and brand managers, subject matter experts, the translation team, interactive, legal and management team
  • Monitoring upcoming content needs and deadlines (announcements, global holidays, etc.)
  • Working with the Global Manager of Editorial and team members to develop annual production schedules for magazines and event programs
  • Effectively prioritizing projects and managing multiple deadlines
  • Volunteering to handle gaps in coverage as needed when the team is short-staffed

Editorial Standards and Quality Assurance

  • Adhering to the AP Stylebook guidelines and any company-style editorial variations
  • Demonstrating an expert understanding of grammar and sentence structure
  • Ensuring accuracy and legal compliance of product information and content
  • Verifying up-to-date and consistent application of trademarks across content assets, which vary by country

Communication and Decision-Making

  • Making informed and intuitive judgment calls sensitive to all factors and teams involved
  • Producing on-brand, compelling content consistent in tone and voice and incorporating impactful marketing flair across company brands, services and events
  • Embracing guidance and constructive feedback from team members
  • Actively participating in the company’s major events, which will require extended working hours and weekends

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None but may direct or train others

Performs any other functions and duties assigned and necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of Market America

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or marketing
  • Minimum five years of experience copywriting, editing and project managing in a team environment, preferably within a matrixed organization focused on promoting products and services
  • Magazine, electronic newsletter and marketing email project-management experience are highly preferred
  • A combination of equivalent experience, education and training will be considered

Computer/Communication Skills:

  • Proficient use of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint required
  • Moderate or higher understanding of AP Stylebook guidelines
  • Moderate experience with the Mac environment, Jira platform and OpenAI ChatGPT preferred
  • Prioritizes and models good communication skills; follows up, provides timely responses, and implements a proactive and positive approach
  • High levels of reading comprehension, writing and speaking in English (emphasis on syntax, punctuation and originality)
  • High levels of active listening, attention to detail, critical thinking, mathematics, creative problem-solving, complex problem-solving, and judgment
  • Ability to get along and work with diverse personalities; tactful, mature, flexible
  • Participative management style—an advocate of team concept
  • Results- and people-oriented, with judgment to balance other business considerations
  • High energy level, comfortable performing multifaceted strategic projects in conjunction with day-to-day tactical
  • Service-oriented but assertive/persuasive

Travel:

  • Semi-annual conference participation and related travel may be required

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Normal office environment with little exposure to dust and weather conditions prevalent at the time (i.e., cold, hot/humid)
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, cameras, photocopiers, and filing cabinets
  • Regularly required to talk, walk, stand, bend, twist, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch
  • Raise and lower an object from one level to another, less than twenty (20) pounds.
  • Visual acuity must be a minimum of 20/40 (corrected), and normal hand/eye coordination
  • Normal or corrected hearing
  • Must be able to perform in an office environment where ninety (90) percent of work is performed sitting.
  • Occasional long or irregular hours of work
